Moredun welcomes Dr Valentina Busin as new Head of Virus Surveillance Unit

The Moredun Group is delighted to welcome back another familiar face, Dr Valentina Busin has returned to Moredun as Head of Virus Surveillance Unit (VSU).

Valentina is a farm animal veterinarian, specialising in small ruminant medicine and management. After graduating in 2007 from the University of Turin, Italy, she moved to Scotland and spent few years in mixed and farm animal practice, before following her passion for sheep and goats and obtaining the Diploma for the European College of Small Ruminant Health Management in 2014.

That lead to discovering a true passion for research and evidence-based medicine, which she pursued by completing a mechanical engineering PhD program jointly between Moredun and Heriot-Watt University on point-of-care diagnostics. Another move brought her to work as a senior clinician in disease investigation and surveillance at the School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine of the University of Glasgow. Here, she discovered the fascinating (and critical) world of animal disease surveillance, an area of veterinary medicine she strongly believes needs greater attention and investment.

Travelling and the international scene had always been a great drive for Valentina, so she joined the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations as a veterinary consultant. In this role, which she will continue, she supports national veterinary services in detecting, diagnosing, and reporting on transboundary animal diseases (TADs).

Now Valentina has very happily returned to Moredun, where she thoroughly enjoyed her PhD and loved the positive vibe and culture of the institute. At Moredun she aspires to be part of an internationally recognized research institute, contributing to their cutting-edge research programme and leading the VSU.

As Head of the VSU, Valentina is committed to promoting animal health and supporting the Scottish livestock industry through high-quality diagnostic testing, surveillance, education, and stakeholder engagement. She is also looking forward to working with the talented VSU team building on their strengths, fostering collaboration, and mentoring colleagues to help them achieve their goals and ambitions.
